Corrections officer charged with leading smuggling ring

NEWARK - Investigators call Corrections Officer Luis Ramon's actions "abysmal." They say he helped inmates break the law and put his own coworkers' safety at risk.

Investigators say Ramon, a corrections officer at Northern State Prison in Newark, smuggled narcotics and cell phones into the prison several times a week. They say Ramon led the smuggling ring involving 35 people, 16 inmates and the rest of the accomplices on the outside.

State Attorney General Paula Dow says "When criminals are locked up they should absolutely not have the capability to generate crime and violence in our communities."

It is at least the third major criminal case investigation involving corrections officers in New Jersey smuggling drugs and phones in just the last year. Officials admit the problem has proved difficult to control.
