HILLSIDE - Police are calling for safety improvements along Route 22 in Hillside after the stretch of road claimed three more lives. Police tell News 12 New Jersey there have been more than 150 crashes and six fatalities here in the last year, including three people who died this past weekend.

Hillside police say they want the Department of Transportation (DOT) to put flashing lights along the S-shaped stretch of the state-owned highway, which they requested in 2008. Police Chief Robert Quinlan says even though they requested the flashing lights a few years ago, they've never gotten a response.

The mayor of Hillside says a DOT engineer is coming to take a look at the area. He says they're applying for state funding that would allow police to increase patrols on Route 22.
