Cops probe Rockaway Twp. man's death in apparent machinery accident

ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP - Police are investigating the death of a Rockaway Township man after he apparently became entangled in some drilling equipment.

The incident happened on Midway Court in a wooded area behind the victim's home.

Police say the victim, Robert Gibbonsm, was installing a thermal heating system using a large drill that was attached to a forklift when he apparently became entangled in the drill. They say no one was home at the time of the accident.

News 12 New Jersey has learned that because the accident was on private property with the victim's own private equipment, the state safety agency will not be involved in the investigation.

As the family struggles with the sudden loss, the prosecutor's office says it will determine whether any health-related issue may have played a role in Gibbonsm's death.
