PARAMUS - The Paramus police officer who was shot in the line of a duty by a suspect who later turned the gun on himself shared details of the incident during a news conference today.

Officer Rachel Morgan and fellow officer Ryan Hayo exchanged gunfire with Michael Carmody this past February. Officer Morgan says that when Carmody opened fire after crashing on a ramp from Route 17 to the Garden State Parkway, time slowed down. She was hit in both the chest area and her hips by gunfire. Officer Morgan says she fell to the ground, but kept firing, realizing it was her only option.

Morgan described how she tried to make her body small so she was less of a target, but still able to fight back. Hayo says that he didn't see Morgan go down, but that when he saw her on the ground it was scary. Hayo also opened fire once he arrived on the scene. The news conference was held at the criminal investigations department for Bergen County. Prosecutors said they were going to lay out the ballistics of the incident on February 6 but the conference was more about Morgan and Hayo describing their ordeal.
