DEAL - Officials in a Monmouth County town are considering a controversial plan for beach access.

Borough officials want to require resident-only parking permits along the oceanfront.

The ordinance would require permits to park on parts of nine streets along the waterfront. The plan is slated for introduction at Wednesday's council meeting.

Opponents say that the plan restricts access to beaches recently replenished with taxpayer dollars, but supporters say it may be a fair compromise.

“At the end of the day, as long as there's a place to park and there's enough room for both of us to be here and share the beach, that's fine with me,” says Oakhurst resident Freddy Harary.

Deal officials tried restricting parking on both sides of the street last year, but the plan was tabled after strong opposition.

The meeting for the new plan is scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday at Deal Municipal Hall.
