Controversial mural dedicated to Trayvon Martin defaced

ELMWOOD PARK - A portion of a mural dedicated to Trayvon Martin in Elmwood Park has been painted over, sparking a police investigation into possible vandalism.

The mural was painted on the side of Messina Deli on East 54th Street.

Police have not yet spoken with the building owner. It's not yet clear if the painter had permission or vandalized the mural.

City officials recently cited the building owner because the mural violated zoning ordinances.

Elmwood Park residents have been protesting the mural for more than a month and many say they want the rest of it painted over.

Police say they will keep an eye out for possible vandals in the neighborhood.
