EMERSON - Business owners in Emerson say that a large roadway construction project is hurting their profits.

The work is on Kinderkamack Road in the town. The business owners say it is creating heavy traffic and confusion.

“Traffic all over. [Customers] can’t even get to the area. Then if they do, it’s hard to even park,” says ShortRounds Deli and Catering owner Dan Hivry.

Hivry says that business is down close to 25 percent since the work moved to his side of the street earlier this week.

The long-term project is expected to widen and improve the busy road through Emerson. It should also alleviate traffic, fix infrastructure, update traffic signals and improve aesthetics.

The owners say that they know that the project will help them in the long run, but they say that the town hasn’t been forthcoming with information about the construction.

“The problem is that they don’t give us any warning,” Hivry says.  “So Tuesday morning at 6:30 a.m. they just started digging up in the parking lot. We could have at least ordered less bread or had one less employee or something like that to accommodate."

Emerson officials say that the project needs to be done to accommodate the tens of thousands of cars that move through town each day. They say that updates are posted online and daily alerts are sent out.

The project began in September and is expected to be completed in July.

It is a joint effort between Emerson, Bergen County and New Jersey Transit.
