NEWARK - A community in Newark is mourning the loss of a Virginia teacher who was in town dropping off her nephew when she was gunned down this past Friday.

The memorial for 29-year-old Dawn Reddick now stands at the corner of Maple and Chancellor avenues, near where the shooting took place.

According to witnesses, Reddick dove in front of a 7-year-old stranger to protect the child's life, possibly sacrificing her own in the process. Rev. Earnest Lee Chamblee knew Reddick since she was a child when she attended services at the Promised Land Baptist congregation. He will preside over her wake on Thursday and funeral on Friday.Newark shooting takes life of Virginia teacher
