ELIZABETH - A shooting that took place this weekend in Elizabeth on the corner of Jefferson and Magnolia avenues has reignited a debate over how crime is being dealt with in Union County's largest city. One person was killed and two were injured in the shooting.
Community activist Salaam Ismial says that more needs to be done in order to stop the violence. Ismial says Union County Prosecutor Ted Romankow, as well as Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage, play politics, which needs to stop in order to help.
Romankow says he doesn't play politics when it comes to his job. He also admits he and Bollwage might disagree on how best to fight the violence, particularly, when it comes to gang activity. But, he says both are committed to keeping city streets safe.
The prosecutor also says that "Ismial, quite frankly on the record, doesn't know what he's talking about. He goes around wagging his tongue a little bit too much. The reality is, when it comes to fighting crime, the mayor is on the same page that I am."
