CHATHAM - Communities are on alert after several brazen attempts by suspects trying to lure children into vehicles.

Police say 20-year-old Ahmet Islami came to Mary Help of Christians Academy in North Haledon to pick up a 13-year-old girl, saying her mother had given him permission to pick her up. Islami had befriended the girl online and talked about having sex. But when he arrived, the girl wanted him to leave. A staff member at the school became suspicious and called police, which led to an arrest.

In Chatham, two young girls were approached on Friday by a man near King’s Supermarket on Main Street. The man made lewd comments and followed them when they walked away. That same afternoon, also on Main Street in Chatham, men in an SUV tried to talk to some girls near Garden Avenue.

Police are still looking for the suspects related to the incidents in Chatham.
