Columbia H.S. Prom Showcase hanging on by a thread

Officials in South Orange are attempting to strike a balance as they work to save an annual high school event that was marred by violence

SOUTH ORANGE - Officials in South Orange are attempting to strike a balance as they work to save an annual high school event that was marred by violence last year.

The Columbia High School Prom Showcase has not yet been canceled, but still could be. Tonight, organizers and supporters of the event met with the police chief and the village administrator to try and find a way to keep the red carpet showcase alive.

Last year's event was overshadowed by violence. As couples made their way to prom, police say young people from nearby towns crashed the festivities and began fighting. They say mutual aid was requested and several arrests were made.

Village Administrator John Gross says he's not opposed to the showcase, but is opposed to using Grove Park as the event site again because he says it can't be secured.
