Closing ceremony held at Fort Monmouth

FORT MONMOUTH - Dignitaries, military personnel, and former employees gathered today at Fort Monmouth for a formal farewell ceremony before it officially closes Thursday.

Now, Eatontown Mayor Gerry Tarantolo says the 1,100 acres that served as Fort Monmouth will be turned over to Eatontown, Tinton Falls and Oceanport.

Many employees were transferred to Aberdeen, Md. All military personnel were reassigned. The buildings on the property are all vacant now and without power.

A plan is in place for commercial and residential reuse of the property, which includes knocking down some buildings and keeping others for rentals and for sale.
