Clean Ocean Action 2011 findings released

SANDY HOOK - The Clean Action group released a report that says more than 450,000 pieces of garbage were picked up during the annual "beach sweep" in 2011.

According to the report, a giant Elmo costume, toilets, furniture and more were found along the beach.

Large amounts of plastics were found on the beaches, a public health threat. Plastics release toxins into the water and marine animals often think they are food.

The good news is, there are more volunteers this year and fewer cigarettes were found along the shoreline.
