Civil group calls for tolerance during annual event

MAPLEWOOD - Garden State Equality made a call for tolerance tonight during its annual Transgender Night of Remembrance.

The advocacy group paid tribute to transgendered people who have been killed due to intolerance, including Victoria Carmen White, who authorities say was killed during a bias crime.

Garden State Equality says it chose to hold the event at the Burgdorff Performing Arts Center in Maplewood, because White was killed in Maplewood. Group members say that it lends strength to their message.

Two men have been arrested and charged with White's murder. Officials say the case has also been referred to the bias crimes division of the prosecutor's office.
