EAST ORANGE - Police say Operations Midway and Borderline have put pressure on the streets near the Newark - East Orange border, leading to the arrests of dozens of suspected gang members.
Authorities say the roundup began Tuesday night. By this morning, a two-pronged attack on suspected Bloods and Crips by East Orange police and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office has resulted in more than 40 arrests.
Police say the operations were triggered by law-abiding citizens who were tired of feeling trapped inside their own homes. Cops say there was a spike in violent crime over the summer in the area, including the broad-daylight murder of a teenager in July.
