NEWARK - A new Superintendent of Newark Public Schools has been approved by the state education board.

Christopher Cerf, the former New Jersey education commissioner, was confirmed by a 6-4 vote by the state Board of Education.

Gov. Chris Christie hand-picked Cerf to take over following the departure of former superintendent Cami Anderson.

Anderson resigned following major criticism by Newark officials, teachers and students to her "One Newark" education plan.

Newark residents are also unhappy with the addition of Cerf. They say they do not want Newark schools to be run by the state, but instead run by the city itself.
