SECAUCUS - Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) unveiled several new initiatives today aimed at getting bad teachers out of classrooms and improving student performance. Speaking at Secaucus High School, Christie said that some reforms will be uncomfortable for the union as well as some politicians.

On Monday, the state applied for an exemption to the federal No Child Left Behind Act. If granted, it would give the state more flexibility in how it spends federal education dollars. A main goal of the exemption is to bridge the achievement gap between poor and wealthy districts.

In order to close the gap, Christie's plan calls for a new teacher evaluation system, which is now operating as a pilot program in 10 Jersey schools, including Secaucus.
