EDISON - Gov. Chris Christie's political future may be in jeopardy after new details surfaced yesterday that link his aides and political appointees to traffic jams in Fort Lee that appear to have been engineered as political payback.

Emails obtained by News 12 New Jersey yesterday also appear to contradict Christie's earlier assertions on the closures, when he denied they were punitive and said his staff wasn't involved.

The governor said yesterday in a statement that he was misled and that some will be held responsible for their actions.

Seton Hall University Political Science Professor Matthew Hale says emails linking the Christie administration to unannounced George Washington Bridge lane closures that caused horrific backups and delays in mid-September are a serious problem.

Hale says he'd advise the governor to take the issue beyond a brief statement issued Wednesday afternoon.

"The fastest way to make this go away is to step up and show some of the courage he showed other places by taking responsibility," Hale says, "even if he didn't know about it."
Professor Hale says it's too early to tell how the “Bridgegate” scandal will play out in the 2016 campaign.
