TRENTON - (AP) - New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has taken $900 million worth of spending out of the $30.6 billion budgetsubmitted to him by the Democratic-controlled Legislature.

The line-item veto of the spending plan Christie announcedThursday averts a potential shutdown of nonessential governmentservices. The new fiscal year starts Friday.

The budget the Republican governor signed adds $150 million inpublic school aid on top of his original budget. It also keeps $447million for the state's poorest schools, which was ordered by thestate Supreme Court.

Christie vetoed outright a separate bill pushed through byDemocratic lawmakers. The so-called millionaires' tax would haveraised the income tax rate on some of New Jersey's wealthiestresidents.
