Christie: End early release program for inmates

TRENTON - Gov. Chris Christie wants to end the state's early release program for prison inmates.

Christie said yesterday that he'll push for legislation to halt the program because he can't end it himself.

The governor also sharply criticized Assemblywoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, who sponsored the early release legislation that was signed into law by former Gov. Jon Corzine. It allows certain inmates to be freed on parole six months before their sentences end.

Christie's decision comes less than two weeks after an inmate who'd been freed early allegedly shot a man to death in Jersey City. The alleged gunman had been let out of prison six weeks before the shooting.

Coleman said one individual's actions don't mean the program should be scuttled. She blamed the Christie administration for failing to properly supervise parolees.

AP wire services contributed to this report.
