EDISON - People across the Garden State are at odds over a decision to lower the state's flags in honor of Whitney Houston.

Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) says he will order flags flown at half-staff at state government buildings Saturday in memory of the New Jersey-native pop star.

The governor says Houston was a "cultural icon" who belongs in the same category in New Jersey music history as Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Bruce Springsteen.

He says her accomplishments were "a great source of pride for the people of the state."

Thousands of people have voiced their opinions about the order on the News 12 New Jersey Facebook page. Many say they are upset with Christie's decision to lower the flag for a person they believe died due to a drug problem. Others supported the governor's call saying she was a beloved prize of New Jersey.

Her funeral will be held the same day in her birthplace of Newark. The 48-year-old was found dead in her hotel room in Beverly Hills on Feb. 11.
