The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart has had strong ties to the papacy since Pope John Paul II visited 18 years ago.

NEWARK - Parishioners at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark were overjoyed Wednesday by news that a Latino pope had been selected at the Vatican.

News of the selection of Argentine Cardinal Jorge Bergogli as pope was spread via the cathedral's walkie-talkie system. The cathedral, which has a Latino majority, has had strong ties to the papacy since Pope John Paul II visited Newark 18 years ago.

Bergogli is credited with modernizing the church in his native country.
