Taste of Crete Greek Wine Cookies

This recipe is adapted from that of my Mother in Law, Evangelia, who taught me how to make these on the family farm in Crete, Greece. It is a recipe that has been passed from generation to generation, they are vegan and made with heart healthy olive oil. I am happy to share them with you. And for those occasions when you have no time to bake, you can enjoy Taste of Crete Greek Wine Cookies available at Taste of Crete and other fine establishments. Enjoy!

Esther Luongo Psarakis

1 ½ cups of Taste of Crete Award Winning Olive Oil

1 ½ cups sugar

1 ½ cups white wine

1 ½ teaspoons baking powder

1 ½ teaspoons baking soda

1 tbsp cinnamon

½ cup orange juice

3 lbs flour (or enough added till dough is rich enough consistency to form into balls)

2 cups sesame seeds (optional)

Beat the sugar with the olive oil and continue with the baking powder dissolved into the wine, the soda dissolved into the orange juice, along with the cinnamon. Gradually add the flour to the liquids and knead until a soft and malleable dough is formed.

Form the dough into balls about 1 1/4” in diameter. Place evenly spaced on a baking sheet and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes.
