Camden on the verge of losing half of its police force

CAMDEN - Camden is considered one of the poorest and most dangerous in the country. Now, the city is on the verge of losing half of its police force.

Camden is struggling to close a massive budget gap. On Tuesday, the 373-member police force could be slashed to just 210 police officers, a loss of 163 cops. The police union says talks with the city broke down more than three weeks ago.

The Camden County Freeholder director is proposing regionalizing police andfire services. Under the plan, cities and towns would pay the county to provide public safety. The director says several towns have inquired about the possibility, but Camden hasn't been one of them.

This weekend, 40 Guardian Angels are scheduled to patrol the streets in Camden.
