Budget hearings held at Statehouse

TRENTON - The state Assembly held another budget hearing tonight to take a deeper look at Gov. Chris Christie's (R-N.J.) line veto items.

While Democrats tied the fate of cuts to the elderly and disabled to the budget, Republicans came to the governor's aid. Assemblyman Declan O'Scanlon (R-Red Bank) said, "None of us likes cuts like this, but we have to accept that every single dollar we spend in this state has a constituency that depends on it."

Christie says more than 100,000 Senior Freeze checks are in the mail to bail out property tax payers. The hearings most likely won't lead to additional spending, but they do rack up political points.

The governor's office says the budget also fully funds prescription drug and food assistance programs for seniors.
