PORT REPUBLIC - A large brush fire consumed dozens of acres of land in Atlantic County.

The fire started Wednesday afternoon in the brushy area of the Garden State Parkway in Bass River State Park. The park is located in Port Republic.

Forest firefighters were able to get the majority of the fire contained, but were still monitoring hot spots.

Exit 48 on the southbound side of the Parkway was closed for a time while crews worked to put out the fire.

Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Larry Hanja said that he expected about 50 acres of land to be affected once the fire is fully extinguished.
