OLD BRIDGE - Firefighters are spraying down homes and properties with water near a wildfire in Old Bridge, which has quickly spread across 150 acres of land.
Most of the flames are inside Cheesequake State Park, but some fear that it could spread to nearby homes.
Nearby residents say they have started preparations for evacuation should that order come from officials. About 20 homes in Old Bridge along Washington Avenue were evacuated for a few hours in the morning.
Firefighters have been using controlled burns to eliminate brush that could fuel the fire. Officials say the fire is not yet contained.
The State Forest Fire Service has been using helicopters to dump water on flames that were difficult to reach from the ground. About 250 firefighters were also called in from across Middlesex, Monmouth and Mercer counties.
Firefighters are expected to be on the site of the flames for days to come.
