NEWARK - The defense attorneys for two former Gov. Chris Christie allies on trial in the Bridge-Gate lane-closing scandal have petitioned the judge for a mistrial.

The attorneys for Bridget Kelly and Bill Baroni would not comment as to why they filed the motion, and the filing was heavily redacted.

This comes as the jury deliberates over the fate of the two defendants. News 12 New Jersey was told that jurors did not really get to deliberate Wednesday due to the attorneys battling over a legal issue with the judge. The jury was eventually sent home early.

Judge Susan Wigenton had denied a motion from the defense to reinstruct the jury on one of their questions about motive. Judge Wigenton previously told the jury that a motive does not need to be proven to find the defendants guilty on conspiracy charges.

The defense did not like this answer. Kelly’s attorney Michael Critchley particularly took issue with the ruling and argued with the judge on Tuesday.

Deliberations are expected to continue Friday.

The judge has not yet ruled on the mistrial motion.
