NEWARK - A cast member of the documentary series “Brick City” was fatally shot overnight in Newark.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed that Darel “Creep” Evans was killed just before midnight on the 300 block of Clinton Place.

Authorities have not yet determined a motive for the shooting. No suspects have been identified.

Evans’s cousin Lajuan Henry says that her cousin was well-respected in the community.

"Kids that don't really have a father figure out here, he was that father figure,” she says. “Everybody has an opportunity to change and he did just that.  And now, now he's gone."

Evans’ anti-violence efforts were profiled in the nationally broadcast Sundance documentary series that aired in 2009. The series followed several figures in Newark. Evans’ story was about how he, a former Crips gang member, and his then-girlfriend, a former Bloods member, were trying to lead a different life.

Anyone with information about the murder is asked to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force tips line at 1-877-847-7432.
