Brendan Tevlin, 19, found shot to death in West Orange

WEST ORANGE - Essex County investigators are piecing together what led to the shooting death of a college student near an apartment complex in West Orange.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray says West Orange police responded to reports of shots fired. Police arrived on the scene and found 19-year-old Brendan Tevlin, of Livingston, dead of an apparent gunshot wound.

Tevlin was found inside of an SUV with shattered windows in the area of Walker Road and Northfield Avenue at around midnight.

According to his Facebook page, Tevlin was a student at the University of Richmond.
He graduated from Seton Hall Prep last year.

People who live in this typically quiet community say they want to know why this happened, and why here. "I do want to know," says Yolanda Harper. "I'd like to know so I could rest a little easier."

The Essex County prosecutor's office says the preliminary investigation indicates Tevlin was targeted.
