TOMS RIVER - A funeral was held this morning for the 6-year-old Toms River boy who was shot Monday by his 4-year-old playmate.
Police say the two boys were playing Monday when the 4-year-old went inside his home and got hold of a loaded rifle. It went off and shot 6-year-old Brandon Holt in the head. He died the next day.
The Toms River community remembered Brandon last night with a vigil following his wake. Brandon's parents already made the decision to donate the boy's organs because they want to help others in their son's name.
Brandon's funeral was held at the Carmona-Bolen Funeral Home on Main Street in Toms River. The funeral services were followed by another vigil.
Police are investigating whether the owner of the gun used to kill Holt will be charged. They would also like to know why the gun was not locked and why it was loaded.
Since the 4-year-old has relatives on the Ocean County police force, the investigation is being handled by the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.
"The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office is in the process of gathering all relevant information presently in possession of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office," said Prosecutor Jim McClain in a written statement.
