LONG BRANCH - A 12-year-old boy is in critical condition after a tunnel he was digging in the sand on the beach in Long Branch collapsed on him.
A police officer at the scene helped dig the boy out and performed CPR. He was taken to Monmouth Medical Center.
The incident occurred just after 3:30 p.m. between Madison and Cooper avenues. The child was accompanied by his mother and sister.
In a separate incident, a fire truck responding to the sand tunnel collapse hit a man carrying his daughter. The man suffered a broken hip. His daughter was not seriously hurt.
