EAST RUTHERFORD - The body of former Bergen County prosecutor and former assistant U.S. Attorney John J Fahy was found on the sidewalk underneath an overpass along Route 17.
Two boys discovered the body at around 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Fahy had gone into private practice in the mid 1990's and also served as Carlstadt Municipal Attorney.
Investigators think Fahy had walked from his home in Rutherford and then shot himself.
"Even though it appears to be a suicide, there doesn't appear to be any evidence of foul play, one has to wonder, a person like Mr. Fahy, why he would bring himself to this," says Bergen County Prosecutor John Mollinelli. "So we will carefully be reviewing this."
The investigation closed down Route 17 South for several hours. Investigators say they recovered a handgun at the scene.
An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
