NEWARK - Authorities are looking for the people responsible for a deadly shooting in New Jersey's largest city.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says Jose R. Rivas, 26, was shot in Newark at around 8 a.m. Friday.

Authorities say the crime scene started in the 300-block of Osborne Terrace at the Yesi Supermarket.

Police say Rivas was opening the corner bodega at around 7 a.m. when he was confronted by two armed men. After a struggle, he was forced into a vehicle driven by a third suspect.

Witnesses say he was later found shot on Hunterdon Street near the Peshine Avenue School. "I'm going to work and he's laying on the side of the road," says Wilbur Ross. "And what I did is I got out of my car to see if he was all right, and he was just laying there."

He was pronounced dead at University Hospital at 8:22 a.m.

Jose A. Rivas was his cousin Jose R. Rivas' partner at the supermarket. The victim was a second-generation grocer, and one of 10 brothers and sisters who worked at bodegas across the city.

His cousin says Rivas had been at the store for five years. "He was doing good," says Jose A. Rivas. "Always helping that area and the community."

Friends and customers say Rivas was well-liked in the neighborhood. "We all loved him," says Michelle Whitaker. "It's just a travesty what happened."

Thomas Fennelly of the Essex County Prosecutor's office says the attack may have been captured on surveillance video. Rivas's bright yellow Hummer parked near the market was towed away as evidence.
