MONTVALE - A North Jersey blood bank is pleading for donations as its supply reaches critical levels.

Community Blood Services in Bergen County says its blood supply is extremely low, primarily because the winter weather has canceled blood drives and kept donors away.

It especially needs Type O-negative blood and platelet donors.

Recently, the center had to reach out as far as Alaska to purchase blood.

"We're low and we need to get up quickly to make sure all of the patients in our local hospitals have the blood they need so we don't delay any elective procedures or cause problems with trauma or other acute cases," says Dr. Ron Walsh.

Community Blood Services has several locations throughout northern New Jersey.
