Black bear visits Monroe Township, climbs tree at country club

MONROE TOWNSHIP - A black bear has been spotted in Monroe Township multiple times recently, most recently being seen taking a dip in the pond at the Fairways at Forsgate.

The bear then climbed into a tree at the Fairway Country Club. The Fish and Wildlife crew was called in to tranquilize him. The 300-pound bear climbed all the way up the tree, so getting him down after he was tranquilized was no easy task.

Branches had to be cut, so they could put a pulley around him and lower the sleeping bear to the ground. After he was lowered from the tree, the bear was taken to the Assunpink Wildlife Area, where he has been taken before and found his way out.
