Bittersweet ceremony as Ocean Gate cop sworn in

OCEAN GATE - It was a bittersweet ceremony in Ocean Gate today, as a new police officer was sworn in to take the place of another who died in a crash back in November.

Officer Andrew Welsh takes the place of Officer Jason Marles, who was killed at age 32. Marles had been on an anti-DUI patrol on Thanksgiving when, moments after his shift had ended, a suspected drunken driver hit and killed him.

At Saturday?s ceremony, the town showed a short moving picture tribute to Marles before passing the baton to Welsh.

Ocean Gate officials say Welsh has already been with the department for two years, often working the boardwalk bicycle patrol.
