BERGENFIELD - In the wake of the October snowstorm that hit New Jersey, Bergenfield school officials have decided that the district may extend its school year from June 19 to June 21. The move is because the district now has a shortage of emergency days, which are usually reserved for the winter months. The district may also open school on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is usually observed as a holiday.

By coming up with a plan now to make up for those three recently used emergency days, the district says it's better positioned for the uncertainty of the upcoming winter.

During the three days off following the storm, police advised it was unsafe to have school, as many buildings were without power and roadways were cluttered with trees and downed power lines.

Should the district exceed the snow days this winter, those days will be made up by shortening the spring recess in April. The proposal must be approved by the Bergenfield School Board. The next school board meeting is scheduled for Nov. 21.
