Bergen County blood platelet supply reaches critically low levels
BERGEN COUNTY - The supply of blood platelets in Bergen County has reached critical levels, according to Community Blood Services.
The organization relies on donors for its supply, but can only keep the platelets for 3 1/2 days. It has been falling short of its goal of collecting 30 platelets a day.
"Platelets are required to take care of cancer patients," says Community Blood Services Dr. Dennis Todd. "The chemotherapy kills off some of the bone marrow and the production of the platelets, putting them in a position where they could bleed out."
