HACKENSACK - Officials say County Executive Kathleen Donovan will veto a proposed merger of the police and sheriff's departments after freeholders voted to merge the two.

The vote Wednesday came after several years of debating the issue.

Supporters say it will save Bergen County money, but opponents say the move won't change the bottom line. "They're saying we'll take the whole existing county police department and put it into the sheriff's department," says Bergen County Administrator Ed Trawinski. "That achieves no savings. There is not a penny saved. They still have to budget the same amount of money to fund that."

Donovan is expected to unveil a plan in the coming months that she says would trim expenses in the police and sheriff's departments.
