PERTH AMBOY - The benches that used to line Smith Street in Perth Amboy have been disappearing, according to residents there.

Mayor Wilda Diaz confirms that the city has removed some of the benches after businesses complained about loitering outside their stores.

Some residents say the lack of benches has been more of an inconvenience.

"They took benches up at bus stop, so now, no one has benches to sit," says Lisa Moreland. "Elderly people waiting on the train or bus. No one has anywhere to sit and it's just sad."

Diaz says some benches do remain and eventually NJ Transit will put shelters at some bus stops in town.
