BELMAR - Two months after Sandy devastated the shore town of Belmar, word from borough officials is that traffic along the entire length of Ocean Avenue could remain closed until Memorial Day.

The news isn't sitting well with residents. Those who live along the ocean fronts are forced to park on side streets and walk to their homes, while access to local businesses is also restricted.

According to Mayor Matt Doherty, the closing is necessary as the entire area is an active construction site. As work is done to repair the entire boardwalk, which was completely destroyed by Sandy, Doherty says opening up traffic on Ocean Avenue would slow down rebuilding efforts.

The borough has set an ambitious goal of reopening the boardwalk in time for Memorial Day weekend.

If a substantial area of the boardwalk is completed earlier than that, Mayor Doherty says he'll open up at least some parts of Ocean Avenue.
