BELMAR - The mayor of Sandy-ravaged Belmar recently returned from a visit to Mississippi, where he learned how communities there coped in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Doherty met with the mayor of Pass Christian, Miss. and says that the Gulf town sustained similar damage from Katrina as Belmar did from Sandy.

Doherty says leaders there encouraged him to investigate Belmar's underground infrastructure as plans are made to rebuild the boardwalk.

Belmar is borrowing $17 million to rebuild the boardwalk.
