BELMAR - Anyone who lights up on the beach or boardwalk in Belmar risks getting a ticket under a new ordinance that bans smoking on the entire beachfront.

The borough council passed the measure, making the law already in effect even stricter.

The new law does away with designated smoking areas that were allowed under the previous rule.

"Not to walk past the smoke and the smokers with the kids makes a big difference," says Kathy Seetoo, of Freehold. "So I'm more apt to bring them here when it's even busier."

The ban is also a way to keep the beach clean of cigarette butts.

Electronic cigarettes are not included in this ordinance.
