Bellville assault victim dies from injuries

A Belleville man who was severely beaten outside his home on May 16 has died from his injuries.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says Ray Cooley assaulted William Fitzsimmons, 85, in Belleville.

BELLEVILLE - A Belleville man who was severely beaten outside his home on May 16 has died from his injuries.

William Fitzsimmons, 85, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday in the hospital, where he had been since the attack.

Ray Cooley, 25, of Nutley, was arrested and charged with the assault. Police say Cooley broke into Fitzsimmons' home and assaulted him.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, charges against Cooley will most likely be upgraded to murder.
