BAYONNE - The Bayonne Fire Department is getting some big help for fire and safety operations.
The city received a $295,000 federal grant Monday that will go toward purchasing 80 sets of critical safety gear, giving the department the best available equipment.
The funding is just part of a big payback for dozens of firefighters across the state.
"It defies all logic and reason to run into a burning building when others are running away from it, but that's what firefighters do," says Sen. Bob Menendez. "And I am certainly proud of their work and I'm proud that these five communities will have $1.1 million to continue to do that work."
In addition to Bayonne, the fire departments of Moonachie, Pomona, Clifton and Riverdale received major grants.
The money will help purchase operational and fire gear and replace equipment destroyed during Sandy.
