BAYONNE - The expansion project on the Bayonne Bridge is set to make history.

The plan marks the first time engineers will construct a new bridge as traffic continues to flow on the existing roadway below. Authorities say one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction, but that there will be overnight and weekend closures.

The project is intended to increase navigational clearance for the bridge and make additional safety improvements.

Crews will begin construction later this year and remove the old deck by 2015.
