EAST ORANGE - Bail has been set at $ 1 million for a man who allegedly carjacked a West Orange Public Works vehicle today and was chased by police through three towns before he hit and killed a pedestrian.

West Orange officials say Jamal Abdul Silvera, 21, of East Orange, sped through Orange and East Orange in the stolen black Ford Explorer.

During the pursuit, authorities say Silvera struck 63-year-old James Calloway, who was opening the doors to St. Mark AME Church at the corner of Glenwood and Springdale avenues in East Orange. Officials say Calloway was taken to University Hospital, where he later died.

The chase ended at Freeway Drive and Evergreen Place when officials say Silvera caused a multi-vehicle accident.

Cops say he was later arrested after a brief foot chase.
