NEWARK - An Essex County judge has raised a baby sitter's bail following the death of a 4-year-old girl found unattended in a Newark apartment with three other children.

Judge Marilyn Williams ordered 38-year-old Sakita Covington held on $500,000 bail. Covington is charged with child endangerment and aggravated assault.

Police were called Wednesday to an apartment in Newark's Bradley Court complex where Naira Bennett was found unresponsive. The 4-year-old was transported to the hospital, where she later died.

The cause and manner of death are pending an autopsy.

Investigators say Bennett and three other very young children were apparently left unattended in the apartment.

The judge says Covington already has one bail jumping charge against her and three previous arrests on unrelated charges.

Covington is due back in court on June 13.
