JERSEY CITY - Police are searching for the mother of a child who was put in a trash bag and left behind a building in Jersey City Saturday afternoon.

Three children heard a child crying while they were playing in a courtyard area on Kensington Avenue. They told the building’s superintendent, who then called the police.

The superintendent’s wife, Rebecca Womers, cared for the newborn boy while they were waiting for an ambulance. The Hudson County Prosecutor says the child is stable in the neonatal ICU of Jersey City Medical Center. He is believed to be three months premature.

Police are hoping a nearby surveillance camera at the building will be able to help them identify a suspect.

Investigators believe the woman is a resident or knows someone that lives at 30 Kensington Ave. since the child was found in an area not accessible to outsiders.

New Jersey has a Safe Haven law in effect, which allows women to drop off a child at a police station or hospital to avoid prosecution.
